Bitmovin Analytics in Dacast: A Complete Guide to the New Metrics

Dacast is transitioning to a new video player powered by Bitmovin. Along with playback improvements, this move brings a significant upgrade to the analytics data available to you.

COMING SOON: These analytics are not yet live in your Dacast dashboard. This article describes what is planned. We will update this page and notify you when the feature is available.

This article explains what the new analytics will include and what each metric means for your streams and videos — in plain language.

What Analytics Will Be Available?

The new analytics fall into four simple categories. Together, they give you a complete picture of how your content is performing — without requiring any technical background to understand.

1. Audience & Reach — “Who Watched?”

These metrics tell you how many people watched, and where they came from.

MetricWhat it means for you
Total ViewsThe number of times your video or stream was played.
Unique Viewer SessionsIndividual viewing sessions — helpful for estimating unique viewers.
LocationWhere your viewers were watching from (country, city, region).
Device TypeWhether they watched on a phone, laptop, tablet, or TV.
BrowserWhich browser or app they used (Chrome, Safari, etc.).
Referrer / Source PageWhich page on your website the viewer was on when they pressed play.

2. Engagement — “How Long Did They Watch?”

These metrics tell you how engaged your viewers were — not just that they pressed play, but whether they actually stayed and watched.

MetricWhat it means for you
Watch TimeTotal time viewers spent watching your content.
PausesHow often viewers paused — and for how long. Frequent pauses can signal the content is hard to follow.
SkippingHow often viewers jumped forward or backward in a video.
Drop-offViewers who stopped watching before the content ended. High drop-off early on may mean the intro needs work.
Live vs. VODAnalytics are automatically separated between live streams and on-demand videos.

3. Playback Quality — “Did It Play Smoothly?”

These metrics tell you whether your viewers had a good viewing experience — or ran into problems.

MetricWhat it means for you
Startup TimeHow long it took for the video to start playing after a viewer pressed play. A long startup time leads to drop-off.
BufferingHow many times the video paused to load — and for how long. Frequent buffering is the most common viewer complaint.
Playback ErrorsHow many viewers encountered an error that prevented playback.

More detailed technical data (such as bitrate, frame drops, and codec information) will be available internally for Dacast’s engineering team to diagnose delivery issues — but this will not appear in your customer dashboard.

4. Content Insights — “What Content Is Performing?”

All of the metrics above can be viewed broken down by individual video or live stream, so you can compare performance across your content library.

MetricWhat it means for you
Per-Video BreakdownSee all audience, engagement, and quality metrics for each individual video or stream.
Ad PerformanceFor accounts using ad monetization: views per ad slot, and ad completion rates. (If applicable.)
