Frequently Asked
Questions
- Does SRT replace RTMP?No. RTMP remains a core ingest protocol on Dacast and continues to be widely used. SRT is offered as an additional option, giving you more flexibility to choose the ingest protocol that fits your production environment.
- Why use SRT instead of RTMP?SRT is designed for more predictable performance on networks with variable quality, such as public Wi-Fi, mobile connections, or long distance contribution paths. If you are streaming from a stable, controlled network, RTMP continues to perform reliably.
- Do I need special equipment for SRT?In most cases, no. Many modern encoders already support SRT, including desktop and mobile options. Compatibility can vary by encoder version and operating system, so validate your setup before going live.
- Is SRT good for mobile streaming?Yes. SRT is well suited to mobile and remote streaming, where network quality may change frequently, helping maintain stable contribution when streaming from smartphones or mobile encoders.
- Can I switch between RTMP and SRT?Yes. You can choose between RTMP and SRT based on your workflow, without changing downstream delivery or playback.
- What is the difference between SRT ingest and RTMP ingest? Both send your live stream to Dacast. RTMP uses a standard TCP connection and works well on stable networks. SRT uses UDP with real time transport controls, which helps it recover from packet loss and handle jitter on variable or unpredictable networks. Delivery to viewers works the same way regardless of which one you use.
- Can I monetize a stream sent over SRT?Yes. Pay per view, subscriptions, and ad based monetization run through Dacast's built in paywall. The paywall is included on Event plans and above, and available as an add on on Starter.
